Settling

If you are working with activation: fast breath, racing, bracing, overwhelm, consider the following access channels:

  • Body & Movement: Feet pressing into the floor. Slow weight-shift walk.

  • Sensory: Warm mug in both hands. Warm palms on face or chest.

  • Verbal & Cognitive: Extended exhale on a count. Square breathing.

  • Relational: A steady voice, slowed to the pace you want. Attunement in pairs.

  • Meaning & Lineage: Those who stood here. A comfort phrase in a first language.

Clinical Considerations

Introduce these exercises when clients are regulated so they’re easier to use when dysregulated. Breathwork, self-touch, and eyes-closed practice can increase distress for some clients; offer eyes-open, no-touch options and watch for activation. Lead with choice, titrate, and adapt for age, developmental level, sensory needs, mobility, and language.
